| Personally, I find Speaker for the Dead to be the real stand-out of the Ender series. Though the "new" final installment had me on the verge of tears (rare) when I read the letter part... wow... The facet that sets Ender's Game apart is how utterly enthralling it is, particularly to younger readers. I don't think I've had anyone yet, even a few kids who had never read a book for pleasure before (sad I know) be able to resist finishing it. I first "read" it in summer camp when my bunk counselor read it aloud to us chapter by chapter before bed as a young pre-teen. One of the best group reading experiences of my life and every summer I volunteer at the camp and read that book aloud to a group of 12-15 year-olds. | |

| Oh sure, I meant the Ender's series as a whole (in addition to the Shadow 'saga'), though Ender's Game is as you say extremely enthralling and remains my favorite for sentimental reasons. Child genius soldiers waging war on Aliens? Though the later books that really delve into the morality of inter-species encounters, plus Jane is so cool. Also, I second introducing kids to awesome books and group reading (audiobook). Hearing a book spoken aloud adds a certain power to the words (of course this is dependent on the speaker), plus in a group you can talk about the book. | |

| I am actually a huge critic of audiobooks, I simply loathe them. I do however value reading aloud to someone else. As a one-person enterprise I don't really understand the appeal of an audiobook - it's just too slow for me to tolerate really. The personal connection of experiencing a story with someone else however, is much more important.
That, and learning to read better, and aloud are both important skills to cultivate.

| I think your criticisms are very valid Memnoch. When I first heard an Audiobook, I was extremely bored by the slow pace (though by listening to it in a car 1 hour a day did help) and the experiences I've had with group discussions have been mainly atrocious (ie, people who can't read) though the few gems did stick out as something I'd want to repeat.
@Brian, yes the prices seem high, but look at the audiobooks of the sword of truth, there have been various readers who by many estimations are average readers, then Sam T came along and really had a superior reading. Recording a reading for an audiobook takes a long time and good reading isn't something that most people posess.

| Sword of Truth Wheel of Time Mistborn trilogy Farseer & Tawny Man trilogies Timeline There's more I'm sure, those are the ones I can think of at the moment. Just finished re-reading Wheel of Time, think some of Mat's best lines come from The Gathering Storm. - Quote :
- "Because," she said, raising a finger, "while I waited to find you—I honestly didn't know if it would be you or young Perrin—I realized that there were several things I could provide you that no other could." She reached into a pocket of her dress, pulling out several pieces of paper. One was the picture of Mat. "You didn't ask where I got this."
"You're Aes Sedai," Mat said, shrugging. "I figured you . . . you know, saidared it."
"Saidared it?" she asked flatly. - Quote :
- "I don't know. They could put up a warning sign or something. Hello. Welcome to Hindstrap. We will murder you in the night and eat your bloody face if you stay past sunset. Try the pies. Martna Maily makes them fresh daily."
Classic. | |

Classic. Ahh, yes. Great lines ! Some of my favorite. I listen to the series as audiobooks and I started laughing out loud when I heard those lines. I was on the bus at the time x.x - Memnoch wrote:

That, and learning to read better, and aloud are both important skills to cultivate. This is really sad but I love audiobooks because they are usually the only social interaction I get during the day. My fiance drops me off at university really early and I sit alone for 6 hours before class. The few friends I have at school don't stick around before and after class so I'm all alone. Its like someone is sitting there talking to me

| Blood Meridian or the evening Redness in the West is probably the best book ever written by a human, in case anyone wants to break away from fantasy.
The best fantasy is really history anyway.

| I'm adding the Mistborn series by Brandon Sanderson to my list. It ranks right up there with SoT.
Also, I'm reading The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss at the moment and really loving it.

| Two excellent books CK. You should have read them a long time ago. If you like those two I would also recommend Blake Charlton's Spellwright or Peter V Brett's Warded Man. They're not as good as Brandon Sanderson or Patrick Rothfuss, but they're still both very good. | |

| Many great books/series suggested so far I also want to add Mickey Zucker Reicherts Last of the Renshai trilogy and the trilogy directly following that. Brilliant series of books with norse mythology embeded deeply within it. I was thoroughly entertained by each book and found it very different from any other fantasy series I'd read I would suggest them to everyone. | |

| The First Law was an excellent trilogy. He certainly is dark, not just with his humour. He has two other stand alone books in the same world, Best Served Cold and Heroes, and has another book called Red Country coming out this Fall. | |

| My favorite book of all time is Talion Revenant by Michael Stackpole. I've read it cover to cover dozens of times. Yes, my copy is falling apart.
Other favorites include- Jim Butcher's Dresden Files Jim Butcher's Codex Alera Brandon Sanderson's Way of Kings Robert Jordans' Wheel of Time (seeing as I have a WoT tattoo, this one is obvious.) Patrick Rothfuss' Kingkiller Chronicles Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth series Mickey Zucker Reichert's The Renshai Trilogy Steven Brust's Vlad Taltos novels Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged
